How the Chapters Are Taking Shape

Working shape · 27 August editorial call
Chapter structure

Shorter Chapters, Still in Chronological Order

The book will move through the history in order, using shorter oral-history chapters. This gives the voices and images more room, and lets each chapter find the length it needs.

Settled direction

Microchapters

Work in shorter reading units while preserving the underlying historical movement.

Still draft

Names and parts

The chapter names, the three-part grouping and the final part's internal order remain provisional.

Special case

The opening three

The Mohan Rao, Charlie Simon and Mike Watson material may warrant a distinct three-voice treatment.

Still being worked out

Four Editorial Questions

Commission overlap

Commissioned essays may retell history already carried by the narrators. Edit repetition, and split or reposition longer essays only when that improves the oral-history rhythm.

City into technology

We still need a clean transition from the city and company culture into the technical work. The placement of the commissioned pieces may help.

Women's experience

Use the strongest material on women's experiences across the chapters on the city, culture, travel and the workplace. A separate chapter does not have enough material yet.

No broad new roundtable

The team judged the corpus close to saturation for another general women's session. Any new interview must now answer a named gap.

Interview boundary

No Current TI Interviews During This Edit

The team considered interviewing a current senior TI employee and decided to wait. Approaching TI now could bring permissions and corporate review into the final edit.

Later courtesy review

Finish the edit, complete narrator review and prepare a dummy or pre-release copy. The team can then approach TI with a clear version of the book to review.

Technical review

Check the Technical Details

People who understand the engineering need to check the technical passages. The interviews tell us what people remember; documents and specialist review must settle terminology and disputed details.

For the founding group

Review technical language, factual claims and quote treatment—not only whether the story feels right.

For design

Use low-resolution scans immediately as references. Rescan selected reproduction objects properly later and track permissions separately.

For Ankur

Keep draft prose below tapes and verified registers in the evidence hierarchy. A draft can frame a search; it cannot corroborate itself.
